Facts about Canine Influenza
by Wendy Zimmerman DVM
Canine Influenza, a contagious respiratory disease,
mirrors the clinical signs of kennel cough (Bordetella).
Clinical signs include sneezing, persistent coughing,
nasal discharge and low-grade fever. In a small percent
of cases, more severe symptoms such as high fever,
difficulty breathing, and other signs of pneumonia
have been reported. Most cases of Canine Influenza
are treatable. This virus is most likely to be transmitted
by an infected dog sneezing on an uninfected dog
or in their environment. The chances of exposure
are highest in places where multiple dogs are housed
together.
As with any other potentially communicable
disease, exercising a few common-sense precautions
can help
to prevent the spread of Canine Influenza. You
do not need to avoid kennels, dog parks, and grooming
facilities entirely but you should use facilities
that are well known to you. It is also a good idea
to contact the facilities you take your pets to
in
advance to ask about any recent occurrences of
respiratory illnesses and avoid the places that have
had high
rates of documented cases. If your pet is exhibiting
any signs of respiratory illness, you should contact
your local veterinarian immediately as they are
best qualified to make a diagnosis and prescribe
an appropriate
treatment plan.
Since this is a new virus, veterinarians
and researchers still have a lot to learn regarding
treatment and
prevention. Although you should be educated on
this topic, you should not panic. Taking precautions
and
seeking veterinary care at the first signs of
respiratory illness are the best ways to keep your
pet healthy
and safe. If you would like to learn more about
